Grice on Saying

Grice distinguishes between saying and implicating: saying is closely related to the literal meaning of a sentence, while implicating refers to all aspects of meaning an utterer conveys in addition to what she actually says. The distinction is easy to grasp and matches our intuitions in the everyday use of language. However, a debate revolves around the question of whether and when words alone may have the say. This part of the research project takes a fresh approach to the issue, laying the emphasis on how typical saying-related concepts like reference, truth, use, and rule may be accommodated within a Gricean intention-based semantics.
