Grice's Methodology

A central motive for Grice in developing his concept of saying is a methodological one: the concept serves him to argue both the inadequacy of common philosophical methods of ordinary language philosophy and the redundancy (at least in principle) of the programme of ideal language philosophy. This methodological motive forms the subject of this part of the "Saying & Meaning" research project. Particular attention will be paid to Grice's relation to Frege and to the consequences of the methodological motive for the (un?)usefulness of Grice's concepts in linguistic semantics and psychological theories of interpretation.
